History of the Release Date for Wii

In most areas of the United States, the release date for Wii was November 19, 2006. The Nintendo Wii is the successor to the Nintendo GameCube.

Upon its 2006 release, the Wii was priced at $249.99. Initially, Nintendo allotted 4 million consoles for sales in 2006, with most of the units sent to the Americas for sale.

During the first eight days of Wii's debut in the Americas, the console sold a whopping 600,000 units. The unexpectedly high demand for the console led to nationwide shortages of the Wii for years to come.

Currently, the Nintendo Wii is the market leader in video game console sales worldwide. In 2008 alone, Nintendo sold over 45 million Wii consoles.
